Chrysoprase
“The victory stone”

by Raven
The ancients know Chrysoprase as the "victory stone" and modern lore know it as the gemstone of “fertility”, a translucent apple-green chalcedony often mistaken for Jade. Chrysoprase is rare in Europe and often misidentified, as early writers used the term "prase" loosely and modern gemologist distinguished this gemstone as "prase" meaning yellowish-green gemstones which displays a color with less customer appeal and seldom found for sale.

Name:

Chrysoprase was derived from the Greek word "KHRYSO PRASOS" meaning "golden green"

Scientific Properties:

Color: Apple green, & golden green
Hardness: 6.5 - 7
Crystal System: Hexagonal (Trigonal) microcrystalline aggregates
Fluorescence: None
Uses: Mineral collection specimen, gemstone, ornamental use
Location: Africa, Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, Poland, Tanzania and United States
Associated Mineral: Chalcedony, Quartz

History, Myth, Legend and Lore:

The Bible - gem mentioned by Apostle John in the Bible

The Book of Revelations - list Chrysoprase as the tenth foundation stone of New Jerusalem.

Christian Lore - states it is the stone of St. Thaddeus, based on the writings of the 10th century Bishop Andreas of Caesarea, he wrote: "The Chrysoprase, more brightly tinged with golden hue than gold itself, symbolizes St. Thaddeus; the gold (chrysos) symbolizing the kingdom of Christ, and the prassius, Christ's death, both of which he preached to Abgar, King of Edessa".

Albertus Magnus - relates the story of Alexander the Great, who wore a prase on his girdle when he led his men in battle, associating Chrysoprase as the "victory stone", which could have been an emerald or jade.

"The Fable of Alexander the Great" - On his return from his Indian campaign wishing to bathe in the Euphrates, he laid his girdle, a serpent bit off the stone and dropped it into the river". - Albertus admits that the story seems like a fable - comparatively belongs to a later period.

14th Century Lapidaire - Chevalier Jean de Mandeville states: "Chrysoprase comes from India, it has a green color, mixed like leek juice and sometimes with golden drops. It is hard to find and gives grace to he who wears its, and it is good for the eyes".

Treaties of Gems - Camillus Leonardus claims: "Its principal virtue is to cherish the sight. It gives assiduity in good works; it banishes covetousness".

Volmar - states the gem was also said to make a condemn man invisible if he would placed this stone on his mouth - he would be able to escape from execution. The stone was believed to make the thief invisible - a virtue often attributed to Opal.

Thomas Holley Chivers - wrote: "Rich, brilliant, like Chrysoprase glowing, was my beautiful Rosalie Lee".

The Lapidary - Marbode of Rennes wrote a poem: "Midst other treasures to adorn the ring, this gem from Africa's burning sand they bring. A parent of gems, rich India from her mines, the Chrysoprase, a precious gift, consigns".

The Crusaders - brought the stone to the continent and claimed to be emerald. Cups of green glass and Chrysoprase reside in various churches and cathedrals, claimed to be the cup of the Holy Grail.

Modern Lore - Chrysoprase is said to enhance mental abilities and provide insight into self-honesty and personal problems. The stone was used to awaken the imagination and reveal the hidden talent of its owner. Chrysoprase was recommended medically to treat the reproductive organs and increase fertility and also said to give vitality and strength by increasing the assimilation of Vitamin C.
