Medical Intuition- Tune in to Your Body and Improve Your Health: Book Excerpt

"The Body Knows" - ask a medical intuitive:

by Caroline Sutherland
Dear Caroline,

I am a 37 year old woman with 2 children and a part time career. I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. What strategies do you suggest to cope with this problem?

Carole Ann P, Great Falls, MT

Dear Carole Ann,

As much as motherhood is a very rewarding career, handling two little ones can be stressful not to mention the part time job. Being female these days means multi-tasking, juggling nine balls in the air and high expectations - mostly of ourselves.

On the physical plane, high blood pressure can be controlled with 3 important strategies. 1. Recognize the foods and substances that elevate your pulse rate.

2. Lower carbohydrates.

3. Exercise

By now your medical doctor has probably suggested blood pressure medication and this is a life-saving strategy but I’d like you to see how your high blood pressure is mostly your own creation.

1. Pulse testing: Place your thumb and first finger around the carotid artery points in your neck. You will find these points under your chin right at the jawbone. Identify these pulse points and get familiar with what a normal resting pulse feels like. Then 20 minutes after you have consumed a food or beverage, test your pulse points again. If your pulse is elevated or racing, this is called “cardiac stimulation” a well-know indication of a food allergy or intolerance. The body reacts to the substance you have ingested and the result is a raised pulse or high blood pressure. The most common triggers are caffeine, sugar and alcohol. Eliminate these substances for about 3 weeks and note the difference. Switch to decaf coffee and limit sugar and alcohol exposures. There are many foods and chemicals which can trigger an elevated pulse. Testing will help you to identify them.

2. Blood pressure can normalize by reducing carbohydrates (starches and sugars). Often busy mothers can grab a quick but possibly unhealthy, hi-carb snack. Excess carbohydrates result in high insulin levels in the body. Excess insulin causes fluid retention, alters the mechanics of blood vessels and increases the nervous stimulation of the arteries – cardiac stimulation. Balance your blood sugars by consuming protein consistently at meals and snacks. For a great reference, read Protein Power, by medical doctors Mary Dan & Michael Eades.

3. Consistent exercise can help lower blood pressure and reduce cravings for sweets. Exercise helps to balance blood sugars, and metabolize fats and carbohydrates. Find some form of exercise you can commit to daily.

Now let’s get to the emotional reasons behind high blood pressure. You guessed it – too much pressure in your life. Fun, excitement and lots of things that you enjoy doing but at times, you pile your plate too high. This is a good time to consider more balance in your life and an easy meditation technique.

Choose a perfect corner in your home that is only for you. Find a comfortable chair, a cozy shawl and soft pillow. Place a table next to the chair with some inspirational books and a picture of a peaceful scene. Choose some quiet music like nature sounds; a babbling brook or ocean waves. Every day, choose 15 minutes that is entirely your own to retreat to your quiet space. Think of all the things that you are grateful for in your life, and repeat gratitude phrases over and over to yourself. Notice how your breath changes and the calmness that you feel. Make this a daily practice and soon providing you are avoiding stimulants, you will notice a drop in blood pressure, more stability in coping with your family and a greater appreciation for your life.
